PAMLA 2008
Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association
One-Hundred-Sixth Annual Conference
November 7-8, 2008
Pomona College
Claremont, California
Sponsored by Pomona College, Scripps College, and Bryn Mawr College
The Claremont Colleges Consortium
Established in 1887, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in America.
The college is located in Claremont, California, a charming town 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Pomona is the founding member of The Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate and two graduate institutions, all autonomous and all but one located on adjacent campuses, with a combined enrollment of about 7,000 students. In addition to Pomona College, the cluster includes Claremont Graduate University (established 1925), Scripps College (1926), Claremont McKenna College (1946), Harvey Mudd College (1955) and Pitzer College (1963). The seventh member of the consortium, the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences (1997), is located nearby. The seven institutions jointly support central facilities, including libraries; share a common academic calendar; open their courses to one another’s students; and cooperate in sponsoring special programs. This allows students to enjoy the intimate atmosphere of a small, residential college while still having access to the resources of a larger university.
Pomona’s 140-acre campus has 60 buildings, including 12 residence halls housing nearly all students in attendance.
The PAMLA conference will use four academic buildings for its panels: Mason Hall, Crookshank Hall, the Hahn Building, and Carnegie Hall (all just steps from each other), in addition to Frank Dining Hall for the two luncheons, and the Smith Campus Center’s Meeting Room 208 for the Forum and Doms Lounge for the Friday night cash bar.

Transportation to Claremont
The closest airport is Ontario, CA. It is served by many commercial airlines. Claremont is about 10 miles west of the airport, a 15-20 minute ride. This being Southern California, renting a car might provide the easiest mode of transportation. Only two of the hotels are truly within walking distance (for details see the list of hotels, below). For those not renting a car, the cab fare is ca. $20. There usually is enough street parking available in the block around the conference venue.
Parking
There is plenty of free street parking available within a few blocks of the conference facilities. Please do not park in dedicated faculty and staff lot on 5th street between Harvard Ave and College Ave. Please note that parking in the Village south of 4th Street has a two-hour limit. There is no overnight street parking in Claremont…
